She was the one who skived off PE lessons, who came last in the 800 meters on sports day and who, after leaving school, avoided any form of exercise (other than drunk dancing in sweaty nightclubs) for the next 10 years. Approaching 30 She decided all this needed to change. She wanted to run.

She wanted to be the person She saw on TV running down a beach carefree. It looked so easy. She could do that, right?

A trip to the gym made me think otherwise. Running was HARD. Everything hurt. Everything felt wrong. She managed just two minutes of running before She had to stop. But many miles down the line running stopped being something difficult and started being enjoyable.

She started leading running groups in 2013 and since then She has helped hundreds of women start or return to running.

Whatever your reasons for wanting to run whether it’s to lose weight, get fitter, or de-stress learning to enjoy running is key. If you enjoy something you’re more likely to keep doing it. And they all need more things in our lives that they enjoy and that make them feel good.

It worked! She has friends now! Ali On The Run was intended to be a running-focused blog, and for a long time, it was, particularly as She trained for my first marathon, the Hamptons Marathon, in 2011.

She grew up in Contoocook, NH, then went to college at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, CT, where She earned a bachelor’s degree in print journalism and minored in Spanish.

She moved to New York City in 2007, and was a Manhattan girl until moving to a semi-suburban lifestyle in Theyehawken, NJ, just across the Hudson. She loved my nine-ish years on the island, but now She is totally digging grass, fresh air, and an 8-minutes-to-midtown ferry commute. It’s the perfect place for our family of four.

She is a bit of a health and fitness junkie which lead me to a degree in Exercise Science and certification through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) as a Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP). 

She has done personal training in the past but has mostly focused on the clinical part of fitness in Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation for almost 20 years.

Like most people, She has had issues with my weight throughout my life.  After college, She lost 30 pounds with diet modifications and exercise.  She stopped drinking like a fish and bagels, pizza, and cereal weren’t the main part of my food intake.

She has maintained my weight for over 15 years.  When She was pregnant with my twins, She stayed active up until the 7th month when She was put on modified bed rest.  She continued to eat a healthy diet without overindulging too much.  She was a weirdo and craved fruit my whole pregnancy!

38. The Ph.D. Runner

The PhD Runner
Her name is Emma (aka The Ph.D. Runner), and this is my personal running blog. She shares my adventures (and frequent misadventures) as a mediocre and somewhat injury-prone runner. Most runners get faster, She is gradually getting slower.

She was born and grew up in Four Oaks in the north of Birmingham and am incredibly proud of the ‘Second City’. She thinks She is about the only person She knows who is looking forward to the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Her passions are hydrology (rivers), running, classical music, traveling, running and maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

Please join me on my journey as She challenges myself and pushes myself out of my comfort zone. Although She has been running for more than 25 years, She has spent a lot of time sitting on the injury bench.

After recovering from a metatarsal stress fracture, She is now slowly but surely building up the miles. She has finally learned how to be patient! Blog posts are a mixture of race reports, product recommendations and reviews, random musings about my training and progression, rants and raves and hints and tips for new runners. She aims to update my blog at least 2-3 times a month.

She wants people to see that eating nutritious food and staying active doesn’t have to be complicatedand can even be fun! She is a Registered Dietitian (RD) and She has a Masters of Public Health in Nutrition from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

She is also a mother, marathoner, yogi, and lover of the outdoors, adventure, travel, and healthy recipe creation. She lives in the Washington, DC area with my husband, Matt, and our daughter, Riese, who was born in November 2017.

On this blog, you’ll find a mix of daily life, easy recipes, quick meal ideas, running & race recaps, adventures in motherhood, active travel, nutrition tips, and more. In addition to blogging, She has my own nutrition counseling private practice in northern Virginia, helping clients to improve their relationships with food via an intuitive eating approach.

She has also created two online programsa Nutrition for Runners Program, co-authored with a running coach, and an intuitive eating program called Joyful Eating, Nourished Life.

Trail Sisters is a women’s trail running community and online journal. In addition to the journal, they host women’s discussion panels, award the Trail Sisters Adventure Grants, host Women’s Run With Her Trail Running Retreats and more.

Join our community and experience the camaraderie of an awesome group of empowered women making change.

Trail Sisters Founder, Gina Lucrezi, noticed the lack of emphasis and resources directed towards the women in outdoor sports.

Through many discussions with brand leaders, she was told that without more participation by women, they were not likely to change their marketing or product strategies.

Gina’s response was to create a media platform to encourage and educate women about the outdoors. “If participation numbers are to grow, they need to welcome women with opportunity and promote camaraderie. They need to understand the outdoors are a place for them too.”

While juggling contract jobs to pay the bills, Gina would spend most of her free time driving and its social avenues.

The endless hours and hard work were paying off, as the response and eagerness of women wanting to be involved grew rapidly.

She is based in London, UK and has recently graduated from studying Biology at Bristol University. Her Instagram, @foodfitnessflora started off as an encouragement for me to eat three healthy meals a day, without over or under eating.

From the age of 14, She had a dodgy relationship with food and exercise which made me seriously unhappy, but with the help of friends, doctors and the support of the Instagram community, She became healthy again, both physically and mentally.

Now She is a huge advocate on exercising for the mind as much as the body, and for me, all-round health is far more important than any diet or aesthetic goals. Her fitness regime is inspired by many different forms of training, including weight training, resistance training, HIIT, boxing and running.

Her first dive into having a constant fitness routine was with Kayla Itsines’ BBG and BBG2, which She loved and still occasionally use. Now She focuses on skill sports, such as boxing, and anything else that gets the endorphins flowingtreadmill sprints are a favorite!

42. Runblogger

Runblogger is edited and authored almost exclusively by Peter Larson. She is a husband to a wonderful wife, a father of three awesome little kids, a recovering academic, and a rather obsessive runner with a major shoe problem! This site was launched in early 2009 as a place for me to share my thoughts on a wide variety of topics.

However, She became hopelessly hooked on running and slowly found my writing focusing more and more on topics related to the sport.

As a biologist, She developed an interest in running science, and a bit of an obsession with running shoes and running form. She began accumulating running shoes and writing reviews of them, and the site started to take off.

43. Black Girls RUN!

Black girls run? Of course, they do. There’s a huge misconception that black women don’t run. In 2009, Black Girls RUN! was created in an effort to tackle the growing obesity epidemic in the African-American community and provide encouragement and resources to both new and veteran runners.

The goal of “Black Girls Run” is to encourage and motivate black women to practice a healthy lifestyle.

They want to serve as a fitness resource for runners and gym rats alike, as well as provide tips and commentary on staying active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

But they also want to start a movement to encourage ALL women to get off the couch and get active. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health,

Black Girls RUN! wants to encourage African-American women to make fitness and healthy living a priority. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 80% of African-American women are overweight.

BGR! wants to create a movement to lower that percentage and subsequently, lower the number of women with chronic diseases associated with an unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle.

44. Coach Jay Johnson


Both cross country teams finished third at the Junior College national meet (Division II), while on the track athletes broke numerous school records.

Following two years at Pratt She moved back to Boulder, Colorado, to serve as the Recruiting Coordinator and Middle Distance coach at the University of Colorado, where She coached for six years.

As the camp director of the Boulder Running Camps, She interacts with high school runnersthe soul of the sporteach summer. The camp is sponsored by Nike and 2020 will mark our 18th year.

She loves to run. And She loves to inspire others. But sometimes She needs a little inspiration myself. Charmed Running was born out of a necessity for such inspiration. Unable to find the perfect bling to adorn my sneakers, She began to design my own.

Soon after, at the start line after the start line, runners began to ask where She found my running charms. Then it hit me. She needs to offer them to other runners who are seeking the same inspiration.

The site has evolved over time to cater to our visitors which tend to be both athletes and therapists that treat runners.

As a result, you’ll find a mix of articles, some aimed more at runners and some more at those who treat them. They hope there’s something for everyone!

Tom is a physiotherapist with over 15 years of experience and a very keen runner! She graduated with a BSc (Hons) degree in 2002 and since then has worked in clinics in the UK and overseas. His career started in Winchester where he worked in the NHS and developed a specific interest in lower limb rehab and joined the physio team at a semi-professional football club.

Following the Tsunami in 2004 Tom traveled to Sri Lanka and did voluntary physiotherapy work in a hospital, teaching local staff, treating patients and fundraising for new equipment.

Tom returned to the UK in 2006 and started working in Brighton as a senior physiotherapist. His interest in rehab continued to grow and he ran lower limb and spinal rehab groups as well as a chronic pain program.

Maria Abbe is the founder of RunningHerselfTogether, a ministry dedicated to bringing Christ’s light to women through running and mental health awareness.

She is a cradle-Catholic who discovered her worth in Christ while working through her eating disorder recovery.

She now writes, speaks, is a run coach, and leads pilgrimages to help women understand who they are as daughters of God and eradicate the stigma around mental health in the Church.

I'm a 39-year-old wife and mom, residing on the South Shore of Massachusetts with my husband, Mal, our son, Quinn, and our adorable pug, Murphy. Carrots 'N' Cake is where She shares my love of food, staying fit, and living a healthy life.

While She tries to pack the most nutrients possible into each meal, She has a number of favorite foods that are not necessarily 'healthy,' but are still delicious and fun to eat (hello, cake).

If eaten in moderation, She believes that the 'bad' foods can be part of a well-balanced diet and so Carrots 'N' Cake was born! Back in 2008, She was recently engaged and wanted to 'shape up' for my wedding day, but I've never been a proponent of crash diets or unsustainable weight loss. She wanted a true lifestyle change, something She could continue long after the wedding was over.

She is obsessed with ultramarathoning and if you read my blog you’ll hear me talking about it a lot. Her ultrarunning idols are Scott Jurek, Anton Krupicka, Timothy Olson, and Seb Chaigneau!

When She started running it would take me 17 minutes to go a full mile. As of May 2013, She can do one mile in 11 minutes.

That may not sound fast to you but it’s fast compared to where She startedand She is proud of it. Plus, haven’t you ever heard? Slow and steady wins the race.

Okay, so She is never actually going to win a race but running has taught me a lot about perseverance and determination. She hopes She never forget my earliest “running” days when it would hurt to run/walk half a mile.

Those days taught me so much. She also really like cross-training doing core work like planking, and She also likes weightlifting!
