Previously, he had overseen the design of the hardware of the devices. Hence the changes that he brought in overhauled the user interface as he tried to make the interface look and feel more modern.
To be honest, the user interface looked modern.

Apple Inc has dominated the market for years and will be the dominant force in years to come. Their dedication towards developing and innovating is second to none.

By creating the iOS they already have an ecosystem of their own which is often described as a “walled garden”. This “walled garden” provides an extremely pleasant experience but it is very hard to get into. So no matter what the competitors are developing; Apple is always one step ahead of them.
